Daily Prompt: Mentor Me

“Have you ever had a mentor? What was the greatest lesson you learned from him or her?” -The Daily Prompt

Of course I have had a mentor! The most prominent one that I can think of would probably be my immediate past Key Club Lieutenant Governor who guided me down the path that I have taken. (Side note: for those of you who don’t know, Key Club is a student-led community service organization for high school students). She provided me with all of her files, documents, and resources. She gives me advise whenever I need it too. I like that she kept in constant contact with me, especially when I first took over the position last April.

The main thing I learned from her was to be ULTRA-ORGANIZED WITH EVERYTHING. She taught me to keep one digital copy and one printed copy of every Key Club document that I ever encounter. She taught me to organize everything on my hide drive in addition to my USB in case one of the two ever crashes. She taught me to plan ahead, keep everything in my records, and to always be on top of things. If you slack, it’s painful catching back up. In addition, whether it be for good or for bad, she made me realize that a leader can’t always be as loved by his/her followers as they may want. For instances, I am a super smiley and happy person and I’m friendly towards everyone I meet but I’ve found that while my personality works perfectly for some of my clubs, others choose to take advantage of it. They will intentionally choose not to attend mandatory events, never submit required report forms, and forget to respond to my e-mails just because they think I won’t take the step to yell at them. Not cool. I don’t like to be assertive with people but I don’t like to be taken advantage of either. I wish everyone would simply listen and do their job without having any problems. Why can’t it be that easy?
